Nana Asmau bint Usman Dan Fodio was undoubtedly one of the foremost female scholars and educators of Africa. She gained a deep knowledge of Quranic teachings, as well as four languages (Arabic, Fulfude, Hausa and Tamachek).
She was pioneered a novel educational system called "Yan Taru" (The collective) which taught women, children and even men about their religion by culturally appropriate means. Nana Asma’u transcribed and preserved her father’s work after his death, she was a governmental advisor to the Caliph Muhammad Bello, her brother.
Nana Asmau mediated in community matters, authored books on history, law, medicine, poetry and religion. She was poetess who used her poetry as teaching aids; a translator, who used her skills as a polyglot, to enhance the options to learning.
